SSI Attorneys Serving Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a government benefit which is administered by the Social Security Administration. SSI benefits are paid to people with limited income and resources who are 65 and older, blind or disabled.
One way that SSI is different from SSDI is that it has no work history requirements. Whereas people must have worked and paid into the Social Security system for a period of time in order to be eligible for SSDI benefits, no such requirement exists for receipt of SSI benefits.
Aged 65, Blind or Disabled
Anyone 65 or older with limited income and resources may be eligible for SSI benefits. As defined by the Social Security Administration, the term blind means legally blind. A disability for SSI purposes is the same as for SSDI. A disability is any physical or mental impairment that is expected to significantly impair a person's ability to work for at least one year or which may cause death.
